Bitcoin is the original cryptocurrency and the first use case of the technology of blockchain. The digital currency was created in 2009 by a person, or group, under the pseudonym of Satoshi Nakamoto.
Bitcoin was created in response to the banking collapse of 2008 and was intended to be a peer-to-peer electronic cash system that would not have to rely on banks and rather would be run through a decentralized network.
Bitcoin is often seen as the future of money, or certainly the evolution of it, as it provides a financial system that cannot be manipulated by one central authority. It provides anonymity in transactions, and is entirely borderless and global — as well as only existing digitally.
The popularity of Bitcoin has seen it grow to become a much sought after investor asset as its market is not only volatile, but also explosive. In 2017, the coin reached a high of $20,000 but managed to blow past that number in December of 2020 after being valued at mere cents in its early years.
