Flow is a blockchain designed to be the foundation for games, apps, and various digital assets. It was founded by Dapper Labs, a company best known for the CryptoKitties and NBA Top Shot projects. Thanks to Dapper Labs' experience, Flow was created to be as developer-friendly as possible.
Flow is built upon four core pillars: Developer ergonomics, Consumer onboarding, Multi-role architecture, and Resource-oriented programming.
Developer ergonomics is the Developer-First approach. Flow offers many open-source tools to developers, such as Software Development Kits (SDKs). Flow also utilizes the Cadence smart contract programming language. Its main feature is called resource-oriented programming. This feature allows developers to create unique digital assets, whose ownership is being tracked by Cadence. Flow offers developers a learning platform for Cadence, called the Flow Playground.
Consumer onboarding refers to a set of features aimed at creating a better user experience. This refers to such enhancements as:
- Improved smart-contract functionality integrated into Flow wallets.
- DApps have an easier time protecting users' assets and their accounts.
- Additional security can help users avoid security leaks and support multiple signatures.
Multi-role architecture (multi-node architecture) is the last core pillar of the system. Flow takes a different approach to validating nodes, by giving them four different roles. These are consensus, verification, execution, and collection nodes. Consensus nodes operate on the HotStuff Proof-of-Stake algorithm. They are responsible for deciding the presence and order of transactions. Verification nodes have a role in confirming the work done by Execution nodes. Execution nodes perform computations associated with each transaction. And Collection nodes focus on creating better dApp data availability and network connectivity.
FLOW token is the native cryptocurrency of the Flow blockchain. The token is easily incorporable to various dApps built on the platform. It is also utilized in securing the system. All four nodes of Flow require FLOW tokens to be staked by validators. Users can also delegate their FLOW to already existing validators if they don't want to become validators themselves. All nodes are also rewarded with FLOW tokens, proportionately to the amount of FLOW staked by a cluster of nodes. The FLOW token is also used for network governance and to pay for transaction fees on the network.
