Kusama is the testing and pre-production environment for Polkadot. Developers who wish to develop their projects on Polkadot first test their early versions of their apps and businesses on Kusama. Kusama provides a realistic and live environment to these projects. Adding to this, for any major upgrades and code changes to come on Polkadot’s public blockchain, they are first released and tested on Kusama.
Kusama (KSM) is the native cryptocurrency of Kusama running on their own blockchain. Kusama’s blockchain is a sister chain to Polkadot and mimics Polkadot to a very large extent. KSM token is used to maintain all the activities on Kusama like staking, bonding, governance, and transactions. Kusama has a total supply of 10 million KSM out of which 8.9 million (as of May 2021) have already been minted.
Like Polkadot, Kusama also has Relay Chains where validators stake their KSMs and coordinate the entire ecosystem. Kusama also has Parachains, the separate layer-1 blockchains that can be easily customised by the projects which are using them.
Kusama is also founded by Polkadot creators Gavin Wood, Peter Czaban, and Robert Habermeier in 2016. The token sale of Kusama was organized by Web3 foundation in December 2019.
The testnet environment for Polkadot on Kusama is called Canary. Contrary to other open-source blockchain which provide only a testnet environment, Kusama provides testnet as well as a marketplace.
