Polygon, earlier known as Matic Network was started by a team of 4 co-founders based out of India. They are Jaynti Kanani, Sandeep Nailwal, Anurag Arjun, and Mihailo Bjelic. MATIC was build as a layer-2 scalable solution on top of Ethereum with PoS consensus and adapted version of Plasma.
Polygon has built a complete framework for businesses and developers to build Ethereum-compatible blockchains which are interconnected and interoperable. Polygon decided to take the bigger step against its competitors like Polkadot and Cosmos by introducing compatibility with Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), smart contracts, and Ethereum’s programming language Solidity.
Polygon offers fast and easy deployment of blockchains with interoperability across Ethereum and many other blockchains. Adding to an Ethereum layer, Polygon has a security layer which performs validator management and checks other aspects of polygon chain; a Mandatory Polygon Networks Layer which is responsible for aggregation of transactions, consensus, and block production; and the Mandatory Execution Layer that interprets and executes transactions on Polygon’s network chains.
Polygon uses an architecture called Heimdall which was originally popularized by Cosmos where any random PoS node is chosen to produce the block. MATIC is the native cryptocurrency of Polygon which can be transferred to other linked blockchains as well. The tokens going out of Ethereum network are locked and newly minted tokens are allowed to transact in the other blockchains. These pegged tokens are burned when they are back and locked tokens are unlocked on Ethereum network.
