BitTorrent, which was created back in 2001, is a well-known platform for peer-to-peer file sharing. It gained notoriety as it allowed users to directly download songs, movies, games, and more. In 2018 the site was purchased by TRON Network. Ever since, BitTorrent has seen many updates, with new products and a cryptocurrency token.
BitTorrent ecosystem has several products under its belt. It offers different torrent clients, with BitTorrent and µTorrent for desktop and Android. Utility tools for said clients, with content bundles and remote access. There are also applications that do not focus on the P2P file sharing aspect. DLive is an online video streaming platform, where users can produce and watch content while earning crypto. On top of that BitTorrent also offers a decentralized storage system. The newest addition to the BitTorrent brand was the introduction of the BitTorrent Chain in late 2021.
The BitTorrent Chain (BTTC) is a cross-chain interoperability protocol. It is a Proof-of-Stake blockchain that leverages sidechains for smart contract scaling. BTTC offers solutions to frequent blockchain problems like low speed, throughput, and scalability. It also remedies the problem of high network fees. BTTC runs at the speed of 7000+ transactions per second, with a confirmation time of 3 seconds. The average transaction fee on the platform is less than $0.01. BTTC is connected to three large blockchains, Ethereum, BSC, and TRON. It allows for swift cross-chain transactions with root contracts and the BTT Bridge.
BTT token is a TRC-10 token that's native to the platform and used within its ecosystem. BTT can be used by file downloaders to increase their downloading speed. When that happens BTT is paid to the file uploader, creating an incentive to upload files for longer and to dedicate more bandwidth. BTT will be integrated over time with the BitTorrent File Storage, and DLive streaming platform. BTT is required to run a validator node, provided the maximum number of 21 validators has not been reached. Users can also vote on specific validators by staking their BTT. Rewards for running a node or voting on specific validators are paid in BTT.
