Dash, as one of the older and more established altcoin, has a rather interesting history. The coin was originally known as Xcoin, but was rebranded as Darkcoin before settling on its current name, Dash, which ties into its use as a speedy digital payment method.
Dash’s early days were predicated on privacy, and it's white paper was described as the first privacy-centric cryptographic currency” based on Bitcoin founder Satoshi Nakamoto’s work.
However, today Dash aims to become a medium for daily transactions and a way to compete with cash, cards, and even traditional financial platforms like PayPal. In attempting to achieve this, Dash looked to inject itself into the struggling economy of Venezuela to act as an alternative to their failing currency.
Dash obtains its speedy transactions through a system of master nodes which validate transactions, meaning that not every node in the network needs to validate every transaction, Master nodes lead to faster transaction confirmations, but also solve scaling issues as the number of nodes required to successfully approve a transaction is reduced to a manageable number.
