Harmony is a sharded blockchain that describes itself as a 'bridge to all chains'. It is a secure, fully scalable, fast, and energy-efficient system. Harmony offers a bridge system, which allows interoperability between chains. Proof-of-Work and Proof-of-Stake chains can be easily connected using the Harmony bridge. Currently, the Ethereum chain and Binance Smart Chain are fully integrated with the Harmony bridge.
Harmony's sharding system consists of 4 shards, and a total of 1000 validator nodes. The network validators are assigned to the shards at random and algorithmically shuffled between them. This system provides security against malicious shard attacks, is verifiable, unpredictable, and scalable. It works on a cuckoo rule, which makes the re-sharding system non-interruptive.
To reach consensus between nodes, Harmony uses an Effective Proof of Stake (EPoS) and Fast Byzantine Fault Tolerance (FBFT) systems. FBFT consensus algorithm allows the system to confirm new blocks in a time of around 2 seconds. It is a linearly scalable system that is 100 times faster than its predecessor - the PBFT algorithm.
EPoS is a novel approach to the PoS system. Validators in an EPoS system are required to run more nodes, the more tokens they have staked. EPoS also distributes the stake evenly and randomly in between all four shards. This prevents potential shard stake domination, which could lead to stake centralization. It also ensures that all shards have the same level of security.
ONE is Harmony's native token and is essential when using the network as well as securing it. Users of Harmony will be paying for transaction fees using ONE. Harmony is EVM-compatible and follows the gas fee model of Ethereum. Since Harmony is based on a PoS model, unlike PoW in Ethereum, transaction fees on Harmony are significantly smaller. Users can expect an average transaction fee of around $0.000001.
Because of Harmony's Proof-of-Stake model, staking ONE tokens is required to secure the network. Users can either stake their ONE to become a validator or delegate their tokens to an already existing one. The reward for securing the chain is distributed in ONE tokens amongst block confirming validators.
Harmony is also a decentralized, community-driven network. Any decisions on the protocol level go through an open governance process. ONE tokens are used in the form of votes whenever such a proposal is made.
