Hedera Hashgraph is a new type of Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT). Instead of storing data linearly, as blockchains do, it utilizes a technology called Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG). A hashgraph itself is not an absolute system, but rather a consensus algorithm. Hashgraph is also an Asynchronous Byzantine Fault Tolerant (ABFT) system. This means that there is no specific time for all nodes to reach a consensus. In a hashgraph consensus, method nodes communicate with each other via gossiping. A node sends a package of information to a random other node. Then the two of them send it to two other ones and the sharing of information grows exponentially. The package that is being sent includes several pieces of information. The transaction information, the timestamp, your digital signature, and a hash of the last message you made and received. This system is a unique hashgraph mechanism called gossip about gossip.
Hedera's native cryptocurrency is HBAR and it has two general uses. It serves as fuel to pay for transactions, smart contracts, and other services. The hashgraph transaction fee is very small, with a cost of about 0.0001 USD. These transactions are also fast, taking up to five seconds to process, with 10000 transactions per second (tps) throughput. It is also used for network protection through a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) model. Staked HBARs are used in a process of virtual voting to determine consensus and find bad actors.
The hashgraph technology was created by Dr. Leemon Baird and Mance Harmon, founders of Swirlds Inc. Hedera's technology is not open source and the hashgraph patent is owned by Swirlds. Swirlds licensed out the hashgraph patent to Hashgraph Consortium LLC, which develops Hedera.
Hedera is governed by a council of some of the largest companies on Earth. These include Google, IBM, LG, and Swirlds. There are 39 spots on the council, and the companies will be changing after their term finishes. The Hedera Council is responsible for making decisions on changes to the network. They also run core network nodes. Users of Hedera can send improvement proposals (HIP) for the council to review.
