Tezos once held the title for the most successful ICO in crypto history, and this is because of the promising idea of the project to allow for not only smart contract governance by the participants but entire network governance.
So, like Ethereum or other programmable blockchains with smart contracts, users of Tezos can set how these smart contracts work, but the project takes the smart contract concept “one step further by letting participants directly control the rules of the network.”
It is pushed towards increased flexibility in the network as part of Bitcoin's problem has always been its slow moving and rigid evolution. By changing the governance rules to be highly flexible, allowing stakeholder to approve protocol upgrades, Tezos is supposed to be a quick moving and reactive blockchain project.
However, it did not get off to a good start following the successful ICO as a dispute took place between Tezos President Johann Gevers and Arthur and Kathleen Breitman, the owners of Tezos' intellectual property rights which slowed progress down on the project significantly.
