Osmosis is an automated market maker (AMM) built using Cosmos SDK. Osmosis allows cross-chain transactions, thanks to the Inter-Blockchain Communication Protocol (IBC). The platform allows users to create highly customizable liquidity pools. In technical terms, Osmosis is a decentralized peer-to-peer, Proof-of-Stake, open-source blockchain. Osmosis' decentralized exchange (DEX) was built specifically for the Cosmos environment.
OSMO is the platform's governance token. Holders of OSMO can use it to vote on proposed changes and implementations for the protocol. OSMO possesses a unique feature, as it can be used for staking and providing liquidity at the same time. This is called Superfluid Staking. Thanks to this feature users who provide liquidity to the pool earn staking rewards. Superfluid staking is a system very beneficial for liquidity providers. It ensures that the interests of liquidity providers are included in the governing and network security process.
OSMO is also used to allocate liquidity mining rewards. OSMO governance participants choose the pools eligible to receive rewards. Also, long-term liquidity providers are awarded by receiving more voting power, and/or, extra rewards. OSMO's last use is to set up the swap fees on the network.
The process of providing liquidity basically means depositing specific assets to an AMM pool. AMM allows users to swap their assets without the need for an intermediary. For example in an OSMO<>ATOM pool, users can deposit either one of the tokens. For that, they receive LP tokens. In basic terms, LP tokens represent the user's share of the pool.
Osmosis' pools possess a high degree of customizability since nothing is hard-coded. Pool creators can customize parameters ranging from the basic ones like swap fees, up to curve algorithms. This lets users adapt to various market situations, such as periods of high market volatility.
