Axie Infinity

Axie Infinity is a game that utilizes blockchain technology, cryptocurrency, and NFTs. The players collect tokenized creatures called Axies. These Axies can then be raised, and later bred to acquire new types of Axies. These creatures are very distinct from each other thanks to a high number of varying body parts they can generate with. Each part also has its rarity, making some parts more valuable than others. A player is required to own at least three Axies in order to play the game, as it uses 3v3 combat. Since Axies are NFT creatures, they belong directly to the player. A player may at any time choose to put his Axie up for sale on the in-game marketplace.

Axie Infinity Shard (AXS) is an ERC-20 token used in the Axie Infinity environment. It is distributed on the Ethereum blockchain, meaning that it is secured by Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus mechanism. AXS is a governance token, as such, it is primarily used to take part in voting. AXS is also stakeable, which allows players to earn passive income. 29% of all AXS is allocated as staking rewards.

The game also allows players to buy plots of in-game land. These plots may randomly generate AXS tokens for the player. Axies living on the plot of land can also be sent out to explore resource nodes. Said nodes hold in-game resources and may also generate AXS.

Axie Infinity was developed by a game studio known as Sky Mavis, and it was launched in 2018. It utilizes a pay-to-play-to-earn gaming model. This means that players need to first invest money into the game to start earning rewards from playing. Sky Mavis hopes to create a more decentralized game environment as more AXS tokens get distributed to players.

Axie uses an Ethereum sidechain called Ronin, which was built specifically for the game. It is an important tool for helping the game's scalability. It also helps with reducing gas fees and speeding up transactions in the game environment.
